About Our Club

Club History:

Charles Archibald and D.R. Kelly of the Department of Agriculture started the first calf club in Elderbank in 1929-30. It was originally the Guernsey Calf Club. Jack Fox was the club's first president.

The first club field day was held in May of 1932 behind the Presbyterian Church (St. Andrews) in Elderbank. In the early 1940s a sewing club was held in the school. The articles were judged and prizes awarded at the end of the school year.

During the war years, the Calf Club became inactive, however, the Garment Club continued with its project until 1949. With the opening of Musquodoboit Rural High School, sewing classes held at the smaller schools ceased.

A Poultry Club was also organized during the war called the Elderbank Poultry Club. In 1958, Peter Stewart organized the Elderbank Calf Club. Initially, the club was very small and some of the meetings were actually held in Peter Stewart's car. In 1960, Murray Killen became club leader. In 1963, Ken Streatch became leader of the 'Garden Project'. Peter and Ken saw the club grow from about seven members in the early 1060s to over 70 members in 1968-69.

As the club grew, more projects were added to include dairy calves, garment, forestry, beef, and rabbit. The name was changed to the Riverside 4H Club in 1964. Some individuals who gave many years to leadership include: Murray Killen, Ken Streatch, Roy DeWolfe, Mrs. Ross Killen, Mrs. Frank Cole, and Ken Fox.

In 1969, the club held a banquet and dance at the end of the 4H year. The main purpose was to involve the parents and let them learn more about 4H and the club. These banquets have continued with much success. They provide a chance for leaders, department people, the Kiwanis, as well as parents to meet and view member and club achievements.
